American import and Indiana native Coombs played college baseball at Ball State University in Indiana, where he alternated between starting and closing in his two-plus years on the school's pitching staff. Before transferring to Ball State, Coombs pitched at Lincoln Trail College, where he was a two-year letterwinner. As a junior at Ball State, he had six saves and made five appearances in 2010 before redshirting due to a season-ending elbow injury. He underwent Tommy John surgery and later had surgery to repair a torn ACL he sustained in a game of pickup basketball before returning to pitch for Ball State as a fifth-year senior in 2011. Coombs bounced back his senior season and posted a 401 record and 2.66 ERA in seven conference starts.

His pitching earned him the chance to continue his baseball career and he signed with the Gary SouthShore RailCats of the independent American Association in October 2011. Similar to his roles on his college teams, Coombs proved to be an asset both as a starter and as a reliever for the RailCats. His pitching repertoire includes a wide variety of pitches, including a cutter, curveball, changeup, and fastballs that he throws from two different arm angles. In three seasons with the RailCats, Coombs has a 19-21 overall record with a 5.30 ERA and 213 strikeouts. For the past three seasons, he has been teammates on the RailCats with current Bite utiltyman Craig Maddox, and during the 2014 RailCats season, Coombs and Maddox were teammates with current Canberra Cavalry reliever Dustin Crenshaw.
