Texas-born right-hander Brunnemann had the rare pleasure of playing for the same organisation that he grew up supporting. A diehard Houston Astros fan since birth, Brunnemann was drafted by the Astros in the 40th round of the 2013 MLB Amateur Draft out of Hardin-Simmons University in Texas. Late-round draftees have a significantly lower chance of rising up the minor league ladder, but Brunnemann has thus far proven doubters wrong. He finished the 2014 minor league season with the Class A Advanced Lancaster Jethawks, after earning a late-season promotion from Class A Quad Cities. He was instrumental in the JetHawks' championship series victory and was named Championship Series MVP after picking up the win in the deciding game. Brunnemann threw three perfect relief innings, striking out six and clinching the championship series for the JetHawks. The accomplishment was merely the icing on the cake for Brunnemann, who was diagnosed with a benign brain tumour when he was 11 years old. After undergoing successful surgery to remove the tumour, he underwent extensive vision therapy and had to wear a helmet on the diamond for the next year. Brunnemann has impressed for the Bite so far this season, surrendering one hit while striking out five through his first 5-1/3 innings pitched in the ABL.
