One of 31 Australians to play in an MLB game, Hughes signed with the Twins as a non-drafted free agent in 2002 and made his major league debut in 2010. He hit a homerun in his first at-bat, becoming the 104th player in MLB history to do so. A longtime member of both WA state teams and the Australian national team, Hughes wore his home country's colours in the 2005, 2007 and 2009 Baseball World Cups and the 2006, 2009 and 2013 World Baseball Classics. He recently joined the coaching staff of the Emeralds, the women's national team, for the Women's Baseball World Cup in Japan, helping the team secure a bronze medal finish.

A product of the Morley Eagles Baseball Club, Hughes played one season in the International Baseball League of Australia and was named an All-Star that year. The WA native joined his hometown Heat when the new ABL had its inaugural season in 2010/11 and hit .337 that year, following it up with a .344 mark in 2011. In 2012 Hughes hit .247 with a Perth career high 22 RBI then followed that up last season hitting .269. He is eight games shy of 100 career ABL games beginning play in 2014 and will take on the additional duties of hitting instructor.
