Tuatara confirm Mintz will return
03/05/2019 5:46 PM ET

Inaugural Auckland manager Steve Mintz will return for a second season, the club announced today.

The former MLB pitcher led the Tuatara to a 14-26 record in their debut Brut Australian Baseball League season.

Recently appointed Auckland general manager Regan Wood said re-signing Mintz was his top priority after starting the role.

"Mintzy was fantastic for us in our debut season, providing an experienced voice and sound knowledge of the league," Wood said.

"He was very good with the players and developed a culture.

"Steve and I will now turn our attention to the rest of his coaching staff and signing a core group of players for season two."

Mintz, who is at Spring Training with the Texas Rangers, was excited for a chance to build on the foundation established in the Tuatara's maiden campaign.

"We did a lot of good things in our first season but we had some opportunities that slipped away from us this year," the 50-year-old said.

"We will look to build from the things we have learned in year one.

"I know there is a lot of potential with our core group and I have high hopes for what we can achieve with a year of experience under our belts."

Next season will be Mintz's fourth as an ABL manager after spending two campaigns with Adelaide.

Mintz took the Bite to an ABLCS in 2016 and back to the playoffs a season later.

Adelaide compiled a 53-43 regular-season record across Mintz's two seasons at the helm.

Mintz will serve as a pitching coach with Class-A Advanced Down East Wood Ducks before linking up with Auckland later in the year.
