Geelong-Korea @ Perth preview
01/08/2019 1:20 AM ET

Perth can tighten its grip on top spot in the Brut Australian Baseball League South-West Division when its faces Geelong-Korea in a four-game series from Thursday night.

The Heat enter round nine a game clear of Melbourne, and two clear of third-ranked Adelaide, after splitting their series with the Aces over the weekend.

Perth can maintain its spot, and edge closer to a second-straight playoff berth, against struggling GK.

The newcomers have managed just six wins in their first 32 games in the league.

But they did manage to steal a win off the Heat in November.

Perth bounced back in a big way to claim a 3-1 series win in Geelong, outscoring Geelong-Korea 48-16.

The Heat racked up 50 hits in the four-game series but their offence has slowed in recent weeks.

Perth managed just 11 runs against Melbourne in round eight.

Chris Clare (2-for-17) and Tristan Gray (2-for-15) had rare quiet series, while Jake Bowey did not record a hit in eight plate appearances.

The trio will have a great chance to return to form in round nine.

GK gave up 21 runs in its final game against Adelaide over the weekend and holds the worst ERA in the ABL.

Relief pitcher Hwi Kwon returns for Geelong-Korea, replacing Na-On Gil.

The Heat have added right-handed pitcher Benn Grice.

Ones to watch

Robert Garcia (Perth) and Jin-Yong Jang (Geelong-Korea) both produced long stints in relief on the way to wins in round eight.

Garcia struck out six in five scoreless innings as the Heat topped Melbourne 4-2 on Saturday night.

Jang worked 6 1/3 scoreless frames for GK in a 4-3 extra-innings win over Adelaide.

The right-hander punched out five Bite hitters.

Jang is slated to return to the starting rotation in game two against the Heat.

DYK?

Geelong-Korea's first win in the ABL came against Perth on November 22 in Geelong.

GK raced to a 7-0 lead after three innings on the back of home runs from Kwang-Min Kwon and Sung-Gu Han.

Jin-Yong Jang started on the mound for Geelong-Korea, picking up the win after striking out three in six innings.
