Campbell, Atherton star for Bandits

Andrew Campbell's fourth-inning grand slam proved the difference on the scoreboard as Brisbane topped Canberra 5-2 at Holloway Field on Saturday night.

Campbell took full advantage of a bases-loaded opportunity to break a 1-all tie, while Tim Atherton was outstanding in his Bandits debut as Brisbane completed a series win over the Cavs.

Mitch Nilsson (double), Wade Dutton (single) and Ryan Battaglia (single) all reached to set the platform for Campbell to take Canberra starter Steven Kent deep.

The slam was the first of Campbell's ABL career and provided a highlight for those at the ballpark after the originally slated doubleheader became a seven-inning outing following poor Brisbane weather.

With a game lost to the rain, the hosts handed Tim Atherton his first start for the Bandits.

The national team representative delivered, striking out 12 Cavs and allowing one earned run on three hits in six innings.

His only major blemish was a solo shot by David Kandilas to lead off the sixth.

Kent - aside from the slam - impressed for Canberra.

He worked four innings, allowing five runs on seven hits and striking out eight.

Mitch Nilsson went 3-for-3 for the Bandits, who are 3-0 for the first time in team history.

Brisbane travels to Perth for a four-game series starting on Friday night, while the Cavalry are at home to Sydney from Thursday night.
