SYDNEY, NSW -- With the conclusion of the 2016/17 Australian Baseball League regular season, it's time to hand out the final weekly awards of the campaign. For their efforts in securing postseason spots for their respective teams, Adelaide's Sean Callegari and Brisbane's David Rodriguez are the Round 10 Delta Air Lines Players of the Week.
Southpaw Callegari pitched the Bite to a crucial win in Game 2 of their homestand against the Blue Sox. When the 24-year-old Vancouver native took the mound, Adelaide were trailing 0-1 in the series and needed two wins to clinch a coveted place in the 2017 postseason. Callegari dazzled in seven innings on the mound, allowing one run on six hits and striking out a season-high seven batters while walking just one. His powerful performance on the mound led the Bite to a series-leveling 5-2 win.
The next night, Adelaide won their second game and made it to the playoffs for the third season in a row, a feat that would have been impossible if not for Callegari's gem in Game 2. In three starts during the 2016/17 ABL regular season, Callegari went 1-2 with a 5.87 ERA, and walked just four batters in 15.1 innings pitched.
Tampa Bay Rays prospect Rodriguez has been a power-packed punch at the plate since joining the Bandits in the middle of the season, evidenced by the bomb he hit in Round 8 above. The Venezuela native hit .471 (8-for-17) with two doubles, two home runs, four runs scored, and seven RBIs in four games last weekend against Canberra.
After a multi-hit game in the series opener, Rodriguez's bat just kept getting hotter as the set progressed. He drove in a pair of runs in Game 3, and concluded the seres with a 2-for-5 day at the plate with four RBIs, and those two hits were a double and a home run. The 20-year-old first suited up in yellow just before the New Year, and finished the regular season hitting .442 with six home runs and 25 RBIs in 19 games. Look for him to make an impact for the reigning champions in the ABL Preliminary Final presented by Ladbrokes this weekend.
