Canberra Eliminated from Playoffs with Loss
01/24/2015 5:48 AM ET

The Canberra Elite Cavalry (21-24) lost against the Sydney Blue Sox (22-23) at Blacktown International Sportspark Saturday night, thus closing the Cavs' chances at a post-season appearance. The Cavalry needed to win each of their final two games to advance, but Sydney ended all hopes with the 2-1 victory.

Canberra received a solid outing from starter Gaby Hernandez (1-4, 4.47), as he threw five and two-thirds innings with no earned runs against, but a throwing error in the bottom of the 6th from shortstop Marcus Lemon proved costly. The error came with two outs, and subsequently allowed the Sox to add their only runs of the game. The Cavalry also struggled with runners on, as they stranded five runners on the night, and went 0-5 with men in scoring position.

Sydney pitcher Markus Solbach (6-3, 4.81) went seven innings strong allowing only one run on five hits and a walk, and was followed by Aaron Sookee who closed out the final two innings in perfect fashion. Like Canberra, the Sox struggled with runners in scoring position as they hit 1-9 in such situations, but were able to capitalize on one of only a few opportunities when it mattered most.

The win for Sydney will preserve their own chase for the playoffs, as they rely on some help from the Heat to take care of business against the Brisbane Bandits in Perth. The Cavalry are slated to send Tristan Crawford (2-4, 5.04) to the mound for their season-finale tomorrow afternoon for the 2pm start. The Cavs will look to play spoiler as they look to end the season on a high note.
