Round 9 recognition for Sydney's Sookee, Heat's Tripp

SYDNEY - After their tremendous performances this past weekend, Sydney Blue Sox pitcher Aaron Sookee and Alcohol. Think Again Perth Heat outfielder Brandon Tripp have been named the Delta Air Lines Pitcher and Player of the Week for Round 9. This will be Tripp's second time winning the weekly award while Sookee is a first-time recipient.

Perth currently finds themselves sitting upon the top of the standings, now nine weeks into the Australian Baseball League brought to you by Be the Influence: Tackling Binge Drinking season. A large factor in their season-long dominance has been the outstanding play by Tripp who picked up right where he left off this past weekend. During Perth's series against the Jet Couriers Melbourne Aces, the former Baltimore Orioles 12th round draft pick hit for an average of .471 (8-from-17) with seven runs batted in, two home runs and three runs scored.

After his tremendous Round 9 performance, Tripp finds himself near the league lead in nearly every statistical batting category. He is currently second in the ABL in batting average (.333), second in RBI (25), third in home runs (5) and second in doubles (11).

Just as Tripp is doing his part to help the Heat compete for a title, Sookee is doing the same thing in Sydney. Although the Blue Sox are currently in fourth place, Sookee is playing a large role in keeping them in contention for the third and final playoff spot. The Auburn native may not not have a winning record on the year (3-4), but he has been one of the more reliable pitchers in the ABL and proved that again this past weekend against the Brisbane Bandits.

The 22-year-old put Brisbane's bats to sleep on Sunday, becoming just the third pitcher this season to throw a complete-game shutout. In his nine innings pitched, Sookee allowed just three hits while striking out five batters. After his impressive performance this weekend, the former Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim prospect is fifth in the league in ERA (2.45), fourth in innings pitched (47.2), and fifth in strikeouts (35).

Next weekend Sookee and the Blue Sox will be traveling to Brisbane for a rematch against the Bandits, while Tripp and the Heat head to Melbourne to face off with the Aces once again.
