Zimmerman

Welcome to the Blue Sox, RHP Ryan Zimmerman!

The Minnesotan has been playing both as a starter and out of the bullpen for the St. Paul Saints, the 2019 North Division champions in the American Association. In July, Zimmerman was named American Association Pitcher of the Month, and with 105 strikeouts in 110 innings pitched this season, the versatile righty is bolsters an already strong Blue Sox bullpen.

Blue Sox Manager Shane Barclay said, "In only his second year as a professional ball player, Ryan has made a huge impact in St. Paul this Australian winter. We are confident that at just 23, Ryan can make a big impact in Sydney this season."

"We are excited to welcome Ryan to the Blue Sox!" Barclay added.

Quick Q&A with the man himself:

Q: What has attracted to you to come to the Blue Sox?

A: I've known for a while now that I wanted to try to play ball in Australia and Sydney was definitely my top choice for a place to play so I'm very excited for this opportunity. I've heard nothing but good things about the ABL and the Blue Sox so it was an easy decision to want to end up there.

Q: What do you think it will take to see the Sox return to playoffs baseball and finally reach that Championship Series?

A: From what I've heard we have a great core of players on the team, so I think we should be set up great to make a run in the playoffs this season. Team chemistry is always important so hopefully we can come together and have a lot of fun and the wins will follow.

Q: What are you most looking forward to about being in the Blue Sox clubhouse?

A: Definitely most looking forward to getting in the clubhouse and meeting all the guys. It's always fun to see a group of guys with different stories come together on a team, so it will be a lot of fun getting to know all of them.

Q: What is a career highlight for you?

A: I've had a short career so far but my highlight has been being able to play the last two seasons in my home state of Minnesota. Playing in front of friends and family every night for a team that I followed a little bit as a kid has been a ton of fun.

Todd

Welcome back to RHP Todd van Steensel!

The 2019 ABL Reliever of the Year returns to the Sox for another season on the mound. The bearded local has been tearing it up for the St. Paul Saints this year, recording 43 strikeouts and 16 saves in just 31 games. For the Blue Sox last season, he earned 10 saves and 25 strikeouts in 18 innings of relief work.

Blue Sox Manager Shane Barclay said, "At just 28, Todd will become a 10 year veteran of the Blue Sox. With a solid year behind him in the American Association League, Todd will once again form a key part of our bullpen with his power pitching."

"Great to have you back Todd!" Barclay added.

Quick Q&A with the man himself:

Q: What was your favourite change around the ballpark last season?

A: The big change I believe is the belief that the fans had in us, and the belief we had in ourselves in the clubhouse. We fed off the energy the crowd gave us at home and that really picked us up when we needed it.

Q: What do you think it will take to see the Sox return to playoffs baseball and finally reach that Championship Series?

A: We were only one win away last season so we aren't far off. As long as we keep playing for each other I think we will get that championship berth.

Q: What was a favourite moment for you last season?

A: Seeing two new teams join the competition. It was exciting to see the league expand to eight teams and it will be fun to see what Geelong and Auckland can bring into this season.

Q: What are you most looking forward to this season?

A: The new uniform! Can't wait to put on the navy and sky blue. A true representation of NSW colours.

Q: What have you been up to in the off-season?

A: I've been in the US playing with the St Paul Saints. Been having a lot of fun and been playing on a good team!

ANNOUNCEMENT | THURSDAY 29 AUGUST 2019

Harris

Welcome back to RHP Ty'Relle Harris!

The American reliever had a great first season with the Sox, boasting an 0.87 ERA in 20 innings of work, with 31 strikeouts and 4 wins to his name. His passion for baseball and enthusiastic approach to the game were certainly infectious around the clubhouse. Harris has previously played for the Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs organisations, reaching AAA level for the latter, and played Indy ball in more recent years.

Blue Sox Manager Shane Barclay said, "From all reports, Ty'Relle was the life and spark up in the bullpen last season, and it certainly transposed on to the field with his performances."

"We are extremely lucky and honoured to have a pitcher of Ty'Relle's class and competitiveness returning for a 2nd season. It reinforces that the club is continuing to head in the right direction culturally and I am sure we all welcome Ty'relle back with open arms." Barclay added.

Quick Q&A with the man himself:

Q: What was your favourite change around the ballpark last season?

A: The best part was the entire atmosphere created by Adam Dobb. We had a great group of guys on the team, and front office staff including yourself [Krissie] were all a part of the team. Fans were excited and there is definitely a lot of hype for this season.

Q: What do you think it will take to see the Sox return to playoffs baseball and finally reach that Championship Series?

A: Just continue to build off of last season. We have a lot of new pieces, but we definitely have momentum. We will really need the fans to pick us up because once we create that atmosphere of being a tough ball park to play in, that momentum will continue to build, and you will see some very confident and aggressive players. We go off the fans energy!

Q: What was a favourite moment for you last season?

A: My favorite moment was when the team went to New Zealand. We swept the series, but that's when the team clicked together on a different level. Also when we had the sell out crowd against Brisbane. That was the most electric atmosphere in the ABL last season.

Q: What are you most looking forward to this season?

A: Looking forward to eating lamb and kangaroo burgers. Over easy egg, pineapple, and BEET-ROOT!!!! I just enjoy the whole experience. I'm ready to get back on the field with the guys, work our asses off, and have fun and crack jokes in the locker room. Hopefully no ones feelings gets hurt! *laughs*

Q: What have you been up to in the off-season?

A: This off season I have been everywhere. I got back from Australia and went to Las Vegas to visit family. I drove from Las Vegas back to Knoxville, Tennessee. I coach a really good 12u baseball team going 55-14-1 on the year, and also I coach Varsity high school baseball and my team won the District Championship this year! I also coach with Nxt Gen baseball and had the opportunity to coach so many Australian kids. I have a huge group of 13-14 year old kids waiting for me in Sydney to start training! I'm teaching elementary school and training as many kids in baseball that I can.

Guyer

Welcome back to RHP Josh Guyer!

Josh delivered some magic every Sunday in his first season as a starter for your Blue Sox. Josh racked up a league leading 7 wins, (the same number of wins as Team Australia starters Atherton and Kent - but with a lower ERA) for the year!

Blue Sox Manager Shane Barclay said, "What a marvellous transition Josh made from reliever to starter last year. A career defining 7-1 record in the crucial number 4 starters role was career defining, and at just 25, I am confident he will only get better."

Barclay added, "Another driving force from the dugout, we welcome Josh back!"

Quick Q&A with the man himself:

Q: What was your favourite change around the ballpark last season?

A: The atmosphere around the ballpark this year was electric. The fans really took to the changes and the players. We could really feel the difference game after game.

Q: What do you think it will take to see the Sox return to playoffs baseball and finally reach that Championship Series?

A: I don't think we need to change a thing. If we play like we are capable of and use the experience we gained from last year you will see us once again in the playoffs and hopefully this time right at the end!

Q: What was a favourite moment for you last season?

A: Probably the Max Brennan walkoff bunt against Auckland in front of a packed attendance record Sydney crowd.

Q: What are you most looking forward to this season?

A: I'm just looking forward to getting the team back together, getting on the field and getting back to the playoffs.

Q: What have you been up to in the off-season?

A: I have been studying a Masters of Physiotherapy at the University of Sydney, working and playing winter ball for the Quakers Hill Pirates!

ANNOUNCEMENT | FRIDAY 23 AUGUST 2019

Burns

Welcome to our newest recruit, Toronto Blue Jays' own Andy Burns!

Andy is currently playing 2B for AAA Buffalo Bisons, batting .280 in 100+ games so far this season for the New York side. Andy got the call up to 'The Show' in 2016 with the Toronto Blue Jays, before heading across to the Lotte Giants in the KBO in 2017 on a one-year deal.

Blue Sox Manager Shane Barclay said, "With both MLB and Korean Big League experience, and the ability to play all infield positions, Andy is certainly a key signing for us."

"Currently he is enjoying a great season with Toronto's AAA Affiliate Buffalo. Respected people who have played with him indicate he is a great competitor and popular team mate." Barclay added.

"Since we started negotiations, Andy has shown a genuine desire to play for the club. That makes us proud, and I know he will be a real favourite with supporters. Welcome mate!"

Quick Q&A with the man himself:

Q: What has attracted to you to come to the Blue Sox?

A: My wife and I always had talked about the possibility of playing in Australia in the winter and the timing had never been right. The opportunity came up this summer and we felt like it was something we couldn't pass on. The opportunity to play in the city of Sydney on a team with great players, staff, and front office is something I'm really excited for.

Q: What do you think it will take to see the Sox return to playoffs baseball and finally reach that Championship Series?

A: It's hard for me to really know since this is the first time in the league and with the team. With that being said, I know the front office is trying to put together a championship team, and as great as it will be to see the country of Australia, my only focus is to bring Sydney a championship.

Q: What are you most looking forward to about being in the Blue Sox clubhouse?

A: I'm excited to just build relationships with what I'm told is a great group of guys, and compete to win a championship.

Q: What is a career highlight for you?

A: I've been lucky enough to play this game for a long time at a lot of different levels all over the world and have made a lot of memories. For a career highlight though it would have to be my MLB debut. I think when you accomplish the dream you've dreamt of your whole life, that's a memory you'll never forget.

Andy added a message for the fans: "I can't wait to get to Sydney and put on the Blue Sox uniform and play for such a great fan base."

Brennen

Welcome back Infielder Max Brennen!

The infielder returns for another season after delivering some thrilling plays for the Sox last year, including his first walk off win and an amazing leapfrog over the head of Team Australia catcher de san Miguel to get home safe that fans are still talking about!

Blue Sox Manager Shane Barclay said, "We welcome Max back for his fourth season with the Blue Sox."

"Two seasons ago, when Max got more time at the plate, he excelled with the bat. I know how hard he works, and I think if he can earn regular playing time, he will return to his form of 2017/18."

"Max has a reputation with teammates as being the leader of pride, passion and drive in the dugout. Everything we desire in a player." Barclay added.

Quick Q&A with the man himself:

Q: What do you think it will take to see the Sox return to playoffs baseball and finally reach that Championship Series?

A: Building off what we did last year. It was a good turnaround year for us but we can't be complacent and happy with just making the finals. I know I'm still hurting after that Perth series. A solid pre season and all the boys moving in the right direction will get us there!

Q: What was a favourite moment for you last season?

A: The walk off against Auckland. It was my first ever walk off and there was a great atmosphere at the ballpark that night, so definitely a special moment!

Q: What are you most looking forward to this season?

A: There's so much to look forward to. It's a great time of the year and I'm very humbled to play in the ABL. The series in New Zealand would be up there, as my dad gets to see me play and I wouldn't be playing at this level if it wasn't for him.

Also the old school Sydney Blues uniforms! I remember watching them as a kid and it would be an honour to wear it!

ANNOUNCEMENT | THURSDAY 15 AUGUST 2019

Dorminy

Welcome to our latest signing, LHP starter Thomas Dorminy!

The 2018 Frontier League Pitcher of the Year, Dorminy posted a 9-5 record with a league-best 2.45 ERA and 109 strikeouts over 132.1 innings pitched that year. This season, he has been tearing it up with the Somerset Patriots in the Atlantic League with 97 strikeouts and a 2.72 ERA posted so far.

Dorminy also just signed with the Lamigo Monkeys in the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) in Taiwan this week.

Blue Sox Manager Shane Barclay said, "Since March, Adam and I have been searching relentlessly to secure a quality Lefty Starter to complement our rotation. Thomas has been at the forefront of this search for months, and during our extended discussions, he has shown that he carries the class and competitiveness that epitomises our club."

"Thomas has been dominating the highly regarded Atlantic League and currently lies in the top 5 for both ERA and strikeouts. I cannot express what a key signing he is, and we are all very excited to welcome him to the Blue Sox family." added Barclay.

Quick Q&A with the man himself:

Q: What has attracted to you to come to the Blue Sox?

A: Good team baseball with a good group of mates.

ANNOUNCEMENT | WEDNESDAY 14 AUGUST 2019

Younis

Welcome back utility Jacob Younis!

With 23 RBIs, 27 runs and a batting average of .294, the 26 year old was a solid contributor to your Blue Sox last season. Younis also represented Australia in the 2018 Japan exhibition series and in the silver medal-winning U23 World Cup side in 2016.

A definite highlight last season for fans was Jacob's nailbiting 12-pitch at-bat that ended with a walk off walk over reigning champs the Bandits!

Blue Sox Manager Shane Barclay commented, "Jacob is a crucial element to the success of the club. Blue Sox through and through, he is our Mr Fixit, able to play almost every position on the field competently as the need arises."

"Already a leading hitter in the league, I believe he will only get better," Barclay added. "Welcome back Youni!"

Quick Q&A with the man himself:

Q: What was your favourite change around the ballpark last season?

A: Last year was the best year for our fan base - they were louder than ever, bigger than ever and more into the game. I think this is a credit to Adam and his off-field coordination of food vendors and things to do around the ball park. Having the best fans in the league really helps us on field and I can't wait for them to be the best again this season.

Q: What do you think it will take to see the Sox return to playoffs baseball and finally reach that Championship Series?

A: I think we need to put teams away once we lead. Last year we had a few games that we let slip from us. In such a short season, every game counts and as it turns out, first place in our division was decided by a tie-break. But hey, that's baseball right?

Q: What was a favourite moment for you last season?

A: HOME CROWD SELL OUTS! I think last year we had by far the most we have ever had in one season and it really helps out!

Q: What are you most looking forward to this season?

A: Looking forward to competing against the best players around Australia. Every year it is evident to see that the league is getting stronger and stronger. It is exciting times for the ABL!

Q: What have you been up to in the off-season?

A: Bit of travel but mainly focusing on taking care of my body and getting ready for Opening Night!

Blue Sox Manager Shane Barclay had plenty to say about the new recruit:

Crouse

Join us in welcoming our newest recruit, Michael Crouse!

The Canadian outfielder played the backend of last season with Canberra Cavalry and the year before with the Melbourne Aces, and punched out some impressive stats with a .429 batting average last year.

Crouse has played in the minors in the Toronto Blue Jays pipeline, was a 2011 Baseball World Cup bronze medallist with the Canadian national team and is currently playing Indy ball with Somerset Patriots in the Atlantic League.

Blue Sox Manager Shane Barclay said, "Michael is a great athlete who will add a lot to our defensive spine, and be a key hitter in our line up. A well-travelled global player, he has shown he can hit, run, throw, and catch at all levels of ball in which he has played, including the ABL."

"The fact that a player of Michael's standing approached the Blue Sox also adds confidence that the club is travelling in right direction." Barclay added.

Q: What do you think it will take to see the Sox return to playoffs baseball and finally reach that Championship Series?

Campbell

Welcome back Blue Sox Outfielder Michael Campbell!

Cambo finished last season with a solid .339 batting average and 43 hits. He was even named to the BRUT ABL Team of the Week four times out of ten last year!

New Blue Sox manager Shane Barclay said, "Michael's approach to the game is the benchmark to which our club will aspire. A man who has always gets the most out of his ability, Mick gets better as the situation get tougher. A fantastic team man and a very underrated right fielder."

Quick Q&A with the man himself:

Q: What was your favourite change around the ballpark last season?

A: Food vending & entertainment to help with fan engagement. Q: What do you think it will take to see the Sox return to playoffs baseball and finally reach that Championship Series?

New Blue Sox manager Shane Barclay said, "Obviously, the return of our Game 1 starter from last year was extremely important. The quality starts he provided last season played an enormous role in the team's success, setting up the pen for the remainder of the series in most rounds."

Quick Q&A with the man himself:

Q: What did you like most around the ballpark last season?

A: The ballpark itself is probably the best one in the league, but the fans and the atmosphere at game time is the best part!

A: *laughs* I've been working! But that keeps me hungry to play every year and helps me appreciate the game, the league and the fact that I can still compete at that level.
