Melbourne scored early and late to topple Adelaide and extend its lead in over the Bite in the Brut Australian Baseball League South-West Division to three games on Saturday.

Jake Romanski's sixth-inning homer proved decisive as the Aces wrapped up a 4-2 win and set up a shot at a series win in game two of their doubleheader against Adelaide at Melbourne Ballpark.

Melbourne did not waste any time securing an early advantage, scoring two runs in the first to give Bite starter Markus Solbach rare trouble.

Lead off hitter Rudy Martin doubled and scored when Darryl George followed up with an RBI-double.

George proceeded to score due to a fielding error by Adelaide second baseman Chris Mead.

The Bite reduced the margin to one when Landon Hernandez (double) scored on a Stefan Welch single in the second.

Jake Romanski damaged Adelaide's hopes of a comeback with a two-run homer - his second in as many games against the Bite - in the sixth.

The Bite were able to claw one run back through Mikey Reynolds in the top of the seventh.

Adelaide will be hoping to keep the series alive in game three when it starts shortly.
