Padres Send Two Star Infielders to Cavalry
11/04/2018 9:29 PM ET

The Canberra Cavalry are pleased to announce the exciting additions of two young affiliate players from the San Diego Padres. The Padres are a Cavalry MLB Affiliate team and the strong relationship is set to continue.

Cavalry fans were witness to three genuine stars in the previous season coming from the Padres farm system. Buddy Reed, Gabriel Arias and Lake Bachar captivated fans in their one season at the Cavalry, indicated by their selection as ABL All-Stars and were widely considered among the league's best.

Justin Lopez and Kelvin Melean are the new two young prospects coming from the Padres for the first six weeks of the 2018/19 season. Much like last year's star performer Gabriel Arias, Lopez and Melean are highly-touted prospects, thanks to their sharp fielding skills. Both players have also shown some great potential with the bat.

Lopez will be the starting shortstop and Melean will be the starting third baseman for the Cavalry during their time with the club from Series 1 through Series 6.

There is excitement within the baseball community in regards to the potential of Lopez and Melean, which is a testament to the level of trust between the Padres and Cavalry.

Cavalry Director of Baseball Operations Donn McMichael is pleased with the Padres relationship which has continued to grow, 'The Padres have long been a strategic partner of ours and we have no doubt this relationship will only become stronger. These two young men are extremely talented and we look forward to their contributions, both offensively and defensively.'

Knowledgeable assistant coach Felipe Blanco will also return for the new season in what is another boost for the club. Blanco has a deep understanding for the game of baseball and will also be a translator for the two Venezuelan rookies.

After coming up one win short of claiming the Claxton Shield last season, Cavalry fans have every reason to be excited for the near future. New international additions along with returning Cavalry favourites should turn the redeveloped ballpark into an excitement arena.

The Cavalry will kick of their season in Melbourne on November 15 and will host their first home series of the season against Brisbane on December 6. Memberships are on sale now in 5-game, 10-game, and full-season packages via http://gocavsgo.com.au.
