Long-time assistant coach Keith Ward will take the helm of Canberra for the 2018/2019 season.

Ward will take over as manager from Michael Collins, who will become an assistant manager.

The move follows Collins' availability being limited since taking up the role of bullpen catcher with 2017 World Series champions Houston Astros.

Cavalry director Donn McMichael said Ward was a perfect replacement for Collins.

"Keith has been a coach with the Cavalry from day one and has certainly earned his opportunity," McMichael told canberracavalry.com.au.

"He's really looking forward to the challenge."

Ward deputised in Collins' absence during last season's best-of-three ABL Championship Series against Brisbane.

Collins took charge of Canberra in 2012, guiding the Cavs to three ABLCS including their Claxton Shield success in 2013.

Canberra also announced recently retired Brian Grening will return as pitching coach while Felipe Blanco will serve as an assistant.
