Keith Ward Named Cavalry Manager, Brian Grening Named Pitching Coach
The 2018/19 Cavalry Coaching Staff behind Keith Ward includes familiar faces Michael Collins, Felipe Blanco, and first-year Pitching Coach Brian Grening

The Canberra Cavalry have announced their 2018/19 Coaching Staff, which will see Keith Ward stepping into the head role as Manager of the team. Michael Collins will remain on the staff as Assistant Manager.

The appointment will mark the first time the Cavalry have a new Manager on Opening Day since 2012 when Michael Collins took over the lead role. But the Manager title will not be foreign to Ward, who has coached the Cavalry since its inaugural season in 2010 and stepped up as Manager for the 2018 ABLCS against Brisbane in February.

Cavalry Director Donn McMichael has faith in Ward to lead the team this season. "Keith has been a coach with the Cavalry from day one and has certainly earned his opportunity to be the team's Manager, and he's really looking forward to the challenge," says McMichael.

Collins, who managed the Cavalry to three ABL Championship Series appearances since taking over the role in 2012, will serve as Ward's Assistant Manager in 2018/19. Earlier this year, Collins joined the defending Major League Baseball World Series Champions, the Houston Astros, as a Bullpen Catcher. The longer and more demanding MLB season impacted his availability to manage the Cavs in the ABLCS and will do the same in 2018/19.

Cavalry fans will surely welcome "Tubby" back in his new role. Cavalry fans will also surely welcome another familiar face in a new role as longtime Cavalry ace and the ABL All-Time Strikeout King Brian Grening will join the staff as Pitching Coach.
Grening was the 2018/19 ABL Pitcher of the Year, capping his season with a win in front of a capacity Canberra crowd in Game 1 of the ABLCS. Grening announced his retirement from playing shortly after the season and was quickly approached by team officials to take on the new role.
Felipe Blanco from the San Diego Padres will also return to the Cavalry to complete the coaching staff for season 2018/19. Blanco reached AAA level as a player and is currently a minor league coach with the Padres.
