Canberra used a strong pitching performance and early offensive spurt to force a decisive game three in its semi-final series with Perth on Saturday night.

Starter Lake Bachar tossed a gem with the Cavs facing elimination, striking out 10 in a 6-3 victory over the Heat at Perth Harley-Davidson Ballpark.

The San Diego prospect worked 5 2/3 innings, allowing three runs before handing the ball over to Steven Kent to finish the game.

Canberra's offence surged early to give Bachar a lead to work with.

The Cavs scored four runs in the third and chased Perth starter Matt Kennelly from the game an inning later as they tacked on two more.

Lead-off hitter Travis Witherspoon's RBI-single opened the scoring in the third and Casey McElroy doubled Canberra's advantage with a double.

David Kandilas made it 4-0, driving in a couple of runs on a line drive down the middle.

The Heat hit back on Tim Kennelly's RBI-double in the bottom of the third before Robbie Perkins went deep and Lee Mills drove in a run to give the Cavs a 6-1 lead.

It forced Perth to the bullpen with Nick Veale taking over from Matt Kennelly.

Veale got out of a bases-loaded jam to keep the lead at five runs.

The Heat then cut the deficit in the sixth.

Robbie Glendinning produced an RBI-double and was driven in by Jake Bowey as Perth reduced the lead to three runs.

Kent worked 3 1/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen for Canberra.

Kyle Simon is set to start for the Heat in the deciding game against Frank Gailey.

Game three starts at 4pm local time.
