Bottom-placed Adelaide eliminated Sydney from the Australian Baseball League playoff race, topping the Blue Sox 10-8 at Active Displays Stadium on Friday night.

The Bite used an early offensive-burst to chase Sydney starter Craig Anderson from the contest and survived a late scare to help Melbourne seal the fourth and final playoff spot.

Max Brown and Stephen Lohr both homered and starter Chris Powell tossed seven innings as Adelaide recorded its ninth win of the season.

The Sox took a first-inning lead as Powell gave up doubles to Trent D'Antonio and Jacob Younis before recording an out.

But the right-hander induced a double play to escape the inning without further damage.

The Bite hit back in the bottom of the first and took a second-inning lead.

Curtis Mead's RBI-single put Adelaide up 2-1 before debutant Harrison Knuckey drove in his first career run on a sacrifice fly.

Brown extended the Bite's with a two-run homer - his second of the season - as Adelaide piled on five runs for the inning.

The Bite added four more in the third with Knuckey collecting his first hit and then scoring on Lohr's sixth homer of the campaign.

Sydney added late runs, including five in the top of the ninth as Adelaide injected closer Loek van Mil to try and finish the game off.

He eventually did, leaving the bases loaded to end the game.

Powell struck out five in seven innings for the Bite, allowing two runs on seven hits without issuing a walk.

Anderson struggled after starting for the Sox, giving up six runs on eight hits in 1 2/3 innings.

Reliever Luke Wilkins allowed four unearned runs in 6 1/3 innings for Sydney.

The series wraps up with a doubleheader on Saturday, starting at 4pm local time.
