Canberra extended its Australian Baseball League winning streak to a franchise-record seven games on Friday night, topping Sydney 7-1.

The Cavs took until the fourth inning to register a hit but when they did they punished Blue Sox starter Clayton Freimuth.

Meanwhile, starter Brian Grening worked eight one-run innings to record his fifth win of the season.

Jay Baum brought up Canberra's first hit with a lead-off triple in the fourth and scored on a sacrifice fly by Cameron Warner.

Nick Hosie's RBI-single scored Kyle Perkins (single) to double the Cavs' lead before Travis Witherspoon added a third run on an error by third baseman Zac Shepherd.

Canberra made it 4-0 in the sixth when Jake Amos came home on a sacrifice fly by Casey McElroy.

Sydney hit the scoreboard in the bottom half of the inning as Michael Suchy took Grening deep to right-centre field.

The Cavs' starter otherwise enjoyed a solid night, striking out seven.

He worked eight innings, allowing the one run on seven hits and one walk.

Canberra added to its lead in the seventh - when Lee Mills drove in two runs with his second single of the night - and ninth.

Freimuth allowed two earned runs on four hits in four innings, falling to 3-2 on the season.

The series continues with a doubleheader tomorrow.

Game one starts at 3.30pm local time.
