Former Canberra and Sydney pitcher Tim Atherton will join the Brisbane Bandits for the upcoming Australian Baseball League season.

Atherton was a standout for the Cavalry in 16 relief appearances in 2016/17 and was rewarded with a spot on Australia's 2017 World Baseball Classic roster, where he started against Japan.

The right-handed pitcher finished last ABL season with an ERA of 1.37, striking out 29 hitters and not allowing a home run in 26.1 innings.

During the WBC the 27-year-old gave up one run in four innings during Australia's 4-1 loss to Japan.

Atherton is entering his sixth season of ABL having spent four with Canberra and one with Sydney.

He has totalled 56 appearances - including 23 starts - and compiled a 13-7 record with a 3.50 ERA.

The former Minnesota Twins' free agent signing missed the 2015/16 ABL season following shoulder surgery.

Atherton will join Steven Chambers (Adelaide, Brisbane & Canberra) and Virgil Vasquez (Perth, Adelaide & Melbourne) as players to have played for three teams in the current ABL.

Brisbane's title defence gets underway against Atherton's former team Canberra Cavalry at home on November 16.
