Highly-touted San Diego Padres prospect Gabriel Arias will join the Canberra Cavalry for the upcoming Australian Baseball League season.

The 17-year-old Venezuelan shortstop signed with the Padres for close to $2 million and will no doubt draw comparisons to former Cav Didi Gregorius.

Gregorius spent the inaugural ABL season in Canberra before climbing to MLB fame with the New York Yankees.

Cavalry chief executive Donn McMichael told The Canberra Times he was excited about the signing of Arias.

"He's No.5 prosect in Baseball America, they've rated him as that, he's an absolute gun," McMichael told Canberra Times.

"He's a 17-year-old Venezuelan, so they've decided to send a chaperone, who the Padres signed for $2 million who's an absolute gun ... he's red hot and he's coming out."

Arias split the 2017 Minor League Baseball season between San Diego's rookie ball team and Class A Fort Wayne Tincaps.

He hit .265 and drove in 17 runs in 53 regular season games, and recorded a batting average of .276 in the TinCaps' run to the Midwest League Championship Series.

Arias is one of three Padres headed to Canberra this season.

Pitcher Lake Bachar and outfielder Buddy Reed will also join the Cavalry.

Canberra is also set to announce the signing of four Toronto Blue Jays prospects as it looks to return to the ABL postseason in 2017/18.
