The CompassMarkets.com Sydney Blue Sox (13-21) took the first of Saturday's double-header, with a 5-1 win over the visiting Canberra Elite Cavalry (19-16), before dropping the night-cap in tight battle, 2-1.
Despite conceding an early lead in the opener, the Blue Sox bounced back swiftly. Shane Kelleher drew a walk, which brought catcher Jake Webster to the plate. Webster put a ball into opposite field, his first ABL hit, which was made even better as he got a double and brought Kelleher in. Webster then crossed the plate, courtesy of a force-out from Malik Collymore (2 RBIs for the game), moving the score to 2-1.
On the back of a strong performance for Sydney, Webster was satisfied to notch his first ABL career hit.
"It's always good to get the first hit out of the way," Webster said.
"But, I'm just happy to contribute to the team win."
On the mound, Blue Sox starter Luke Wilkins (W, 3-3) was lights out, striking out five in a complete-game effort, while only allowing three hits and walking one.
Earning his second complete game of season was very pleasing for Wilkins.
"I was really happy with performance today and things were working a lot better out there for me," Wilkins said.
"There was some great defence from our guys and Jake (Webster) was great behind the plate."
The second game of the double-header featured a pitcher's duel between Craig Anderson (L, 4-2) and Louis Cohen (W, 3-0). The latter was dominant with 10 strikeouts across 7.0 innings of work. Sox veteran, Anderson had a strong outing with 5.1 innings on the mound, allowing seven hits and three walks, whilst striking out two. In relief for the Blue Sox, Sven Schueller, Vaughan Harris and Todd Van Steensel combined for 3.2 innings of relief, keeping the Cavalry scoreless on two hits.
On offense, Alex Howe led the charge going 3-for-4, including one RBI. Aside from that, Sydney only managed two others hits as pitching was the story of the game, with Canberra winning 2-1.
Former Major League pitcher Chris Oxspring will take the mound on Sunday for the Blue Sox as they look to split the series and finish the final home game of the regular season with a win.
