The Sydney Blue Sox (12-20) have dropped the series opener against the Canberra Elite Cavalry (18-15), going down 5-3.

Canberra took an early lead through a River Stevens home-run, the only real blemish on Trevor Foss' (ND, 2-3) line. The Sox starter pitched well and threw 7.0 innings of work, with four strikeouts, while allowing seven hits.

Sydney bounced back with three straight runs scored in the bottom of the fifth, courtesy of base hits to Malik Collymore (20 RBI), Michael Campbell (4) and Ryo Nishimura (2). Jacob Younis continues to swing a hot-bat, going 2-for-4 and moving his average to the .300 mark.

The response was swift from the visiting Cavalry as they scored in the seventh to level it at 3-3. A further two runs were scored in the eighth off the bats of the Perkins brothers - Robbie and Kyle. It was a lead they never relinquished, as Canberra pitcher Tim Atherton (W, 3-0) earned the win with 3.0 innings of relief.

The Blue Sox will aim to level the series in Game Two on Saturday, which will be the first of a double-header.
