SYDNEY, NSW -- As the 2016/17 Australian Baseball League season winds down and the playoff races heat up, strong individual performances become even more key for players and teams. For their efforts in helping their teams to victory, Sydney's Trevor Foss and Canberra's River Stevens are the Round 7 Delta Air Lines Players of the Week.
Foss set the tone in the Blue Sox' lone win of the weekend, on Thursday night. He tossed six innings of five-hit baseball, walking one batter and striking out seven, and his outing paved the way for a combined complete-game shutout as Sydney won 3-0.
The 27-year-old from Wisconsin has had a strong year so far in the Sydney starting rotation, posting a 2-2 record and 2.81 ERA in seven games, all starts. He's also walked just 14 batters in 41.2 innings, and has a strong 1.30 WHIP, which ranks sixth among ABL starters this season.
In Adelaide, Stevens played a key role in the Cavalry's crucial road series win. As a result of the weekend's 3-1 victory over the third-place Bite, Canberra enter the final three rounds of the season with a three-game lead in second place. And the 25-year-old California native did his part in South Australia, hitting .538 (7-for-13) in four games, with three RBIs, three stolen bases, and a walk.
He went 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs in the series finale, which the Cavalry used to fend off the Bite, claim the series and cement their status as the second-place team. Though he arrived after the start of the 2016/17 season, Stevens has made his mark with a .355/.403/.468 slash line, five doubles and eight RBIs in 16 games.
