SYDNEY -- In the tempestuous second half of the season, it takes great performances, both individual and team, to keep a side afloat and in contention for the postseason. For their deftness on the diamond, SA Power Networks Adelaide Bite outfielder Mitch Dening and Canberra Elite Cavalry starting pitcher Louis Cohen are the Round 6 Delta Air Lines Players of the Week.
Dening exploded at the plate over the weekend, as the Bite split their series in Brisbane. The 28-year-old slugger hit .474 (9-for-19) in the four games, with four home runs, eight RBIs, and six runs scored. Dening's breakout performance came in the second game of the series, when he went 5-for-5, belted three home runs and drove in six runs in the Bite's 13-10 win over the Bandits.
His outburst over the weekend not only helped Adelaide win on the field but also increased his batting average by nearly 40 points. Dening is hitting .341 in 24 games on the season, and ranks among the league leaders in several major offensive categories, including batting average (8th), home runs (six, t-1st), RBIs (19, t-3rd), and slugging percentage (.571, 5th).
In his second start of the season, Cohen tossed seven innings of four-hit baseball, allowing no earned runs and striking out five batters. The Cavalry bats responded to Cohen's strong start with four runs of support, winning the game 4-3 to even the series 1-1.
In his second year in the ABL, Southern California native Cohen has been a solid presence in the Cavalry rotation this season. He has a 1-0 record and 0.98 ERA in three games, including two starts, and opponents have hit just .182 against him so far this year.
