The CompassMarkets.com Sydney Blue Sox (9-12) have started their New Year's home stand with a narrow loss against the visiting Jet Courier Melbourne Aces (16-5).
Despite only allowing five hits, the Blue Sox were unable to muster enough runs to claim Game 1 of the series on a hot December night.
Starting pitcher Trevor Foss (ND, 1-2) was outstanding on the mound for the home team, striking out eight, while allowing three runs on two hits across 6.0 innings.
"It was a tough loss," Foss reflected. "They are a good team, which means we have to do everything right."
"It is more important to look ahead and show up for Game 2 with a positive attitude so we can collect a W."
Stone Garrett launched a solo home-run (3) to left field, kick-starting the Blue Sox offense in the first. Garrett continues to swing a hot bat, with his average sitting at .316.
"I was just trying to get a good pitch to hit and I put a decent swing in," Garrett said.
Tucker Neuhaus, Michael Campbell and Jacob Younis provided additional impetus on offense, combining for seven of the Sox 10 hits.
Errors were common-place across the game, with both sides conceding three on the night.
For Melbourne, Mark Hamburger (W, 4-0) had a strong outing allowing three runs on nine hits, whilst striking out 11 across 8.0 innings. Major League star Peter Moylan earned his first save of the ABL season, on his first attempt.
Game 2 of the home stand commences at 7:30pm Friday night, with Craig Anderson (3-1) taking the mound for the Blue Sox.
