Sydney Beats the Heat in Season Opener
10/31/2014 11:38 AM ET

31 October 2014 - The Alcohol. Think Again Perth Heat played the Sydney Blue Sox in their first game of the 2014-15 season on Friday, 31st October at Barbagallo Ballpark. After a stand-up game by Sydney's David Kandilas and Trent Oletjen, Sydney beat the Heat 9-4.

Shawn Sanford took the mound for the Heat and gave up five runs in the top of the second. Oeltjen hit a triple to right field, running in three for Sydney, ending the second 5-0. Kandilas continued Sydney's streak by hitting a line drive running in three to make the score 8-0 in the fourth.

Tim Kennelly, with the Heat's first run of the night, hit a solo-homerun in the fourth. Luke Hughes proceeded with a single, followed by a walk from Matt Kennelly and Allan De San Miguel to load the bases. McDonald hit a double down the line to make the score 8-3. The fourth ended with Nakagawa and Pointer striking out.

The Heat left the bases loaded as De San grounded one out to third, ending the fifth 8-3.
Joey Wong had an exceptional game with numerous defensive plays, including a diving catch and throw to first to end the top of the seventh. Joey Wong continued by sliding into home off a RBI single from Tim Smith to end the seventh 8-4.

Bases loaded in the top of the eighth, Burkard walked Kandilas, scoring Edmonds. Wayne Lundgren took the mound for Sydney to close out the game allowing only a single base run in the ninth, ending the game 9-4 Sydney.

One positive takeaway from the game was the ability of the Perth hitters to get on base. The main downside was their inability to drive in runners in scoring position which played a key role in the Heat earning their first loss of the season.

The Alcohol. Think Again Perth Heat will continue the series against Sydney on Saturday, 1 November in a double header game commencing at 4:05 and 7:20 to defend the Claxton Shield.
