SYDNEY, 8 July - Former Canberra Cavalry and Adelaide Bite pitcher John Holdzkom has been promoted to Triple-A in the Pittsburgh Pirates organisation, just one step below the Major Leagues. Holdzkom, 26, will be making his first appearance at the Triple-A level.

The right-handed pitcher, a member of the New Zealand Diamondblacks during the 2012 World Baseball Classic, was acquired by the Pirates last month and assigned to Double-A Altoona, his first work in affiliated Minor League Baseball since 2012. After allowing just onehit and no runs in six innings with the Curve, he received his promotion to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Holdzkom was a stalwart in the Cavalry's rotation during the club's 2012/13 Claxton Shield-winning season, going 4-3 with a 4.10 ERA in 10 starts. Holdzkom struck out 48 batters that season in 48 1/3 innings but battled command issues at times, walking 43 men.

The righty made four appearances and one start for the Bite during the 2013/14 ABL campaign, going 0-1 with a 13.50 ERA.
