08/19/2013 1:01 PM ET

Baseball Australia and the Australian Baseball League are deeply saddened to hear of the tragic passing of Chris Lane, a very talented and bright young player.

Chris Lane, 22, was playing baseball in Oklahoma, USA on a baseball scholarship at East Central University. Baseball Australia and the ABL became aware of the incident in the media and are shocked by the tragic circumstances of Chris's passing.

The Australian baseball community extends its deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to the Lane family, Chris's friends, and teammates.

Originally from Melbourne, Chris grew up playing baseball for the Essendon and Watsonia Baseball clubs. A talented player, Lane attended the Major League Baseball Australian Academy Program on the Gold Coast in 2008. He was a promising catcher with a bright future ahead of him.

Our thoughts are with Chris's family and friends, and we join the baseball community in grieving this tragic loss.
