CANBERRA, 5 July - The second steering committee of the Asia Series 2013 was held yesterday in Tokyo, Japan where the information of the group assignments and the game schedules was confirmed. The Canberra Cavalry, driven by Rolfe Renault, in coordination with the Australian Baseball League brought to you by Be the Influence: Tackling Binge Drinking is pleased to announce that, as the ABL Champions, the Cavalry will be participating in group B of the 2013 Asia Series this November in Taiwan.

Group A consists of the champions of the Korean Baseball Organisation (South Korea), Chinese Professional Baseball League (Taiwan), and the Chinese Baseball Association (China).  The Cavalry will be joined in group B by the champions of the Nippon Professional Baseball League (Japan), and a second team from the CPBL.  The CPBL is allotted two teams in the tournament as Taiwan is the host nation.

The current plan is for the Cavalry to travel to Taiwan on Monday, 11 November after finishing a weekend series in Sydney against the rival Blue Sox.  This would give time for the Cavalry players to assimilate to the time, but also to playing in stadiums that seat up to 40,000 people.

“We anticipate a tough competition,” Cavalry General Manager Thom Carter said. “All of these teams will be coming off the end of their championship series, while we will just be starting the season.  They will be in great form, but we are pleased with the draw and are hopeful that we can steal one of the early games.  Having partnered with the Hanshin Tigers of the NPBL for the last three seasons, we have a good idea of the quality of play to expect.  All in all, this is a great opportunity for our boys to play in front of such big crowds and get some great experience.”

The Cavalry open their Claxton Shield title defence on 31 October against the Melbourne Aces at the Fort.  This is the Cavalry’s Centenary Match, and will be filled with all the pomp and circumstance honouring their Centenary Championship.  Memberships and group tickets are currently available for the 2013-14 season.
