SYDNEY, 30 January - Canberra Cavalry slugger Adam Buschini and Perth Heat pitcher Jack Frawley have been named the final Delta Air Lines Player and Pitcher of the Week respectively for the 2012/13 season in the Australian Baseball League brought to you by Be the Influence: Tackling Binge Drinking. Buschini and Frawley each shined in Round 13, the final round of competition in the ABL’s 2012/13 regular season.

For Buschini, the Round 13 award, his second of the season, was the culmination of an outstanding campaign that saw the Canberra second baseman become the ABL’s first Triple Crown winner, a baseball rarity in which Buschini led the circuit in batting average, home runs, and runs batted in.

This week, in the Cavalry’s season-ending series win at Adelaide, Buschini belted four home runs to finish the season tied for the most in any year in ABL history with 14. Overall, the Oakland, California native went 9-for-15 (.600) with multiple hits in all four contests including a two-homer affair on 26 January. Buschini batted in nine runs during the series. His .363 batting average, 15 jacks, and 50 total RBI paced the league.

Behind Buschini’s bat, the Cavalry took three wins in four games from the Bite and came from a game behind to earn the league’s regular season title over Sydney. Canberra will host the 2013 ABL Championship Series from 8-10 February at Narrabundah Ballpark in the nation’s capital.

Like Buschini, Frawley turned in a monster performance when his team needed it most. In search of one win on the season’s final day to clinch their third straight ABL Postseason trip, the Heat got Frawley’s best effort of the year. In his first start and fifth overall appearance this season, the right-hander dominated the Melbourne Aces to the tune of eight shutout innings, allowing just three hits. Perth capitalised on the righty’s overwhelming effort by rolling to an 11-1 victory that secured the #3 seed in this year’s Postseason.

Perth will travel to Sydney this weekend for the 2013 ABL Preliminary Final with a trip to the Championship Series on the line. Should the Heat knock off the Blue Sox in the best-of-three series, they’ll head to the capital from 8-10 February for a direct shot to defend their back-to-back Claxton Shield titles.
