SYDNEY, 10 January - Round 10 was a good week if your name was Adam. Jet Couriers Melbourne Aces pitcher Adam Bright and Canberra Cavalry driven by Rolfe Renault infielder Adam Buschini have been named the Delta Air Lines Pitcher and Player of the Week for Round 10 in the Australian Baseball League brought to you by Be the Influence: Tackling Binge Drinking.
Bright and his resurgent Aces dominated to kick off the 2013 calendar year, sweeping the Brisbane Bandits in four straight. Bright set the tone in a Saturday night pitchers’ duel with Brisbane’s Ryan Searle to lead Melbourne to a 2-0 win en route to the sweep. The left-handed Melbourne native spun seven shutout innings, striking out eight to match his season high and scattering four hits. Bright, a former Colorado Rockies prospect who reached Double-A as recently as 2009, picked up his first win of the season on Saturday and dropped his ERA to 2.96 with it.
In Canberra, while helping to extend his team’s grip on first place, Buschini was an offensive stalwart. Over the course of the Cavalry’s four-game series victory over Perth, the Oakland, California native went 8-for-17 (.471) with a double, three home runs, and nine runs batted in. Buschini’s biggest game of the weekend came on Friday night when a 3-for-6 evening saw him homer and drive in a season-high five runs.
As one of the biggest contributors to Canberra’s charge to the top of the standings, Buschini’s name litters the ABL league leaderboard in most offensive categories. The second baseman leads the league in runs scored (28), home runs (9), RBI (33), total bases (76), slugging percentage (.644), and OPS (1.046), and he checks in third in batting average (.356) and tied for second in hits (42). Canberra are 4.5 games clear of Sydney and Perth, both of whom are tied for second place, entering Round 11.
Coming up this weekend, Bright and the Aces travel to Sydney to try to continue their January run while Buschini and his Cavalry mates are at Brisbane to clash with the Bandits.
