11/05/2011 9:51 AM ET
PERTH- Adelaide Bite lost the first game of the 2011/12 Australian Baseball League season 6-1 to Perth Heat in Perth on Friday night, after Thursday's opener was cancelled due to inclement weather.

It was a 1-1 pitching duel through the first six innings, with Perth breaking through with the go-ahead run in the seventh, and adding four more in the eighth.

The Bite scored first, when Calvin Anderson led off the second frame with a single, stole second base and came home on a wild throw.

With Adelaide hurler Dushan Ruzic managing to pitch out of trouble in the early innings, a tense battle was unfolding.

Perth broke through in the fourth frame to make it 1-1, after Adam Courcha was hit by a pitch and scored on Mitchell Graham's hit.

Two more scoreless innings followed, with Ruzic and Perth starter Ben Moore in control. The Heat made a pitching change for the seventh frame, bringing in eventual winner Cameron Lamb.

The game looked like it would be going down to the wire, with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Perth struck gold, with a Dylan Jones double and an Alex Burg RBI single to grab a 2-1 lead.

Reed Brown came on in relief of Ruzic in the eighth inning, and after striking out the first batter he faced, struggled to contain the Perth line-up, conceding four runs, Aaron Bonomi's two-run double the big hit.

Today (Saturday), the Bite play a double-header against the Heat in Perth, the first game starting at 3.05pm Perth time.
