Cavalry Name General Manager to Lead Charge
05/27/2011 3:59 PM ET
The Canberra Cavalry will prepare for their second Australian Baseball League season with confidence after announcing the appointment of Peter Bishell as the club's new General Manager.

Bishell brings a strong business background to the Cavalry having owned and operated his own accounting practice in Canberra for 18 years before taking on the challenges of a new career in teaching prior to being appointed to the Cavalry.

After moving to the Australian Capital Territory in 1988, Bishell soon forged links with local sporting organisations and has held the voluntary positions of Treasurer with both Sportzcare ACT and RacingCare ACT, which provided counselling and chaplaincy services throughout the territory.

While the Cavalry have room to improve after finishing in sixth position with 12 wins in the ABL's inaugural season, the club's passionate fans made their home at Narrabundah Ballpark, nicknamed 'The Fort', one of the League's best in terms of atmosphere and entertainment.

Bishell said that while the club will work diligently to improve results on the field, they are very clear about their wider aims.

"One of our most important goals is for the Cavalry to be a team that the Canberra community can own as their own, we want genuine community spirit around this team, this is an organisation they can embrace," Bishell said, noting that the Cavalry are keen to first prove their credentials.

"In order to be part of a community, you firstly need to earn the respect of that community. We want to show everyone that we can be an integral part of Canberra's sporting heritage."

"I have seen through my own family what sport can contribute to the lives of people, and I want the Cavalry to be able to contribute positively to the lives of others within Canberra for many years," Bishell said.

The 2011/12 Australian Baseball League season gets underway on November 4th.
