02/09/2011 3:54 PM ET

The ABL wishes to congratulate Trent Schmutter, outfielder for the Sydney Blue Sox for winning the ABL Rookie of the Year award. Schmutter finished the season leading the Blue Sox, the league's regular season champion, in batting average, hitting .316 with 1 homerun and 12 rbi's in 98 at bats with 39 total bases, 13 walks and 26 strikeouts. Schmutter had never played professionally prior to this season and has made only a handful of appearances in Claxton Shield Competition (13 at bats). At the age of 23, Schmutter provided a major spark in his rookie season, earning him the inaugural ABL Season's Rookie of the Year.

Schmutter received 70 votes for the award, edging out Rory Rhodes of Brisbane who finished his rookie season with 5 homeruns and 21 rbi's and a .279 average and fellow Blue Sox Alex Johnson who compiled 7 homeruns and 26 rbi's behind the plate this season. Rhodes and Johnson finished with 58 and 47 votes respectively.

The voting process included submission of votes by all ABL coaches, selected media, scouts and staff who have closely followed the ABL season.
