PERTH'S WELTY AND MOORE WIN ABL PLAYER OF THE WEEK AWARDS

17 January 2011

Just one day after taking the outright lead on the Australian Baseball League standings, the 'Alcohol Think Again' Perth Heat have received further good news with the announcement that outfielder Ronnie Welty and pitcher Benjamin Moore have been named the 'Fielders Choice' Players of the Week for Round 9.

The Heat sits alone at the top of the table with 22 wins and 14 losses after sweeping the Melbourne Aces in their four game series, smashing 56 runs while conceding 25, while belting 18 of their hits over the home run fence in an awesome offensive display.

Ronnie Welty was at the forefront for Perth, connecting on 10 hits from 15 at bats for a .667 average, while adding 10 runs and 8 RBI's. Welty's power at the plate also saw him smash five home runs and one double.

Welty's efforts have seen him rise to the top of the League's home run list with 10, putting him two clear of Melbourne Aces and Minnesota Twins infielder Justin Huber with one round to go in the regular season.

While Perth's batting line-up saw them score in double figures in each of their four games, they also received strong support from their pitching rotation which included a match-winning effort under pressure in Game 3 by Benjamin Moore.

Moore was called to the mound with his team down by three runs in the bottom of the third inning, and threw five innings while striking out four batters without conceding an earned run.

Moore's efforts held the Aces in check long enough for Perth's batting line-up to take the lead, with the Heat eventually going on to win the game 16-8 and win the series.

The Heat and Aces face each other in a four-game series again in Round 10, this time at Barbagallo Ballpark in Perth from Thursday 20 January.

The ABL Players of the Week are proudly presented by Fielders Choice (http://fielders.net), one of Australia's leading retailers of baseball equipment, and an official retail partner of the 'Alcohol Think Again' Perth Heat and Brisbane Bandits.
