The Australian Baseball League's top team and its most improved have both received a boost on the eve of Round 5 with Sydney Blue Sox pitcher Wayne Lundgren and Canberra Cavalry outfielder Donald Lutz winning the 'Fielders Choice' Australian Baseball League Players of the Week award.

Lundgren helped the Sox become the first club to lead the standings outright at the end of a round by throwing six outstanding innings in Sydney's 2-1 home win over the Melbourne Aces, giving his team their tenth victory of the season.

The 198cm right hander's stint on the mound allowed just two hits and one walk, while striking out nine Aces hitters in the process. His season record now improves to three wins and two losses.

The strength of Sydney's pitching is illustrated by the fact that Lundgren is tied for third overall in terms of strikeouts this season with team-mate David Welch, while the leader in the category is fellow Blue Sox hurler and former San Diego Padres Major Leaguer Chris Oxspring.

Canberra's Donald Lutz was a clear favourite to win the weekly batting award following his outstanding performance across three games, connecting on six hits from eight at bats for a .750 average.

Lutz' effort at the plate included three runs, six RBI's, one home run and two triples that launched his team to three consecutive victories over the previously top-of-the-table Adelaide 'ETSA' Bite.

Significantly, his contributions came at key times in the game, with his home run in the second inning of Game 3 opening the scoring for the Cavalry. He returned one inning later to drive home team-mate Michael Collins, which gave his side an imposing four-run lead before they eventually won the match 6-1.

The ABL Players of Week are proudly presented by Fielders Choice, one of Australia's leading retailers of baseball equipment, and an official retail partner of the 'Alcohol Think Again' Perth Heat and Brisbane Bandits.

Round 5 of the Australian Baseball League commences on Thursday night with the Brisbane Bandits hosting the Adelaide ETSA' Bite, the 'Alcohol Think Again' Perth Heat are at home to the Canberra Cavalry, while the Melbourne Aces return home on Friday night where they will clash with the Sydney Blue Sox.
