Barely 24 hours after regaining a shared lead of the Australian Baseball League, the Sydney Blue Sox have received another boost after designated hitter Alex Johnson and starting pitcher Chris Oxspring were named the ABL 'Fielders Choice' Players of the Week for Round 2.

The Sydney-born Johnson won the batting award after connecting on five hits from 12 at bats for an impressive .417 average, which included two home runs and five RBIs. Johnson's performance moved him to the top of the ABL's table for batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage.

Notable mentions for the award included Adelaide 'ETSA' Bite duo Quincy Latimore and James McOwen, and Josh Davies of the Melbourne Aces. Latimore is also leading the ABL in multiple statistical categories, including the most home runs (4) and the most RBIs (12).

Johnson's team-mate Chris Oxspring won his second consecutive weekly pitching award after firing down a complete game shutout against the Brisbane Bandits, a performance that allowed just one hit, no runs, no walks and seven strikeouts.

Oxspring, who pitched at the Major League Baseball level in 2005 with the San Diego Padres and has also competed at the highest level in Japan and Korea, has a 2-0 win-loss record in the ABL this season and boasts a miserly ERA of just 0.86.

The experienced right-hander won the award ahead of Liam Hendricks of the Alcohol Think Again Perth Heat, Melbourne Aces hurler Adam Blackley, and Blue Sox teammate Craig Anderson.

Round 3 of the ABL season commences on Thursday when the Adelaide ETSA Bite host the Alcohol Think Again Perth Heat from 11.00am local time.

The ABL Players of Week are proudly presented by Fielders Choice, one of Australia's leading retailers of baseball equipment, and an official retail partner of the 'Alcohol Think Again' Perth Heat and Brisbane Bandits.
