Shayne Bennett

Shayne Bennett - RHP
Hometown: Adelaide, SA
Debut: 22 August 1997
Final Game: 15 August 1999
Teams played for: Montreal Expos

Adelaide-born Shayne Bennett accomplished a feat that many athletes today cannot achieve: the ability to play multiple sports at the highest levels.

The oldest of three brothers, Bennett excelled at Australian rules football. While playing for North Adelaide of the South Australian National Football League, he was drafted by Collingwood of the Victorian Football League in the 1989 draft.

But Bennett never played for Collingwood. Instead, he opted to move to the USA and enroll in the College of DuPage, a junior college in Illinois. He latched on with the baseball team there, watching at first and eventually practicing with the squad. And that's when Shayne Bennett the footballer became Shayne Bennett the pitcher.

When Bennett stepped on the mound, he pitched well enough to attract the attention of scouts and was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 25th round of the 1993 MLB First-Year Player Draft. He played in Boston's system for three years before being traded to the Montreal Expos in January 1996.

Bennett debuted for the Expos on 22 August 1997 and spent his three years in MLB in Montreal. Working primarily out of the bullpen as a middle and late reliever, Bennett posted a 5-7 career record with a 5.87 ERA in 125.2 innings pitched.

After the 2000 season, when he pitched for the Expos' Triple A team in Ottawa and compiled a 3-5 record, Bennett played for the Doosan Bears of the Korea Baseball Organization. In five games with Doosan, he went 0-2 with a 7.32 record.

Bennett also played for the seventh-place Australian team in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, and returned to be honored at the 2014 MLB Opening Series at the SCG as one of 31 Aussie Major Leaguers.
